What to take to the hospital

For you

1. Your going-home outfit

Please don't, under any circumstances, take the skinny jeans you've been wanting to wear for the past 40 weeks. There's no way they'll fit you yet, no matter how quickly your sister regained her figure.

2. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash

Hospitals may have experts on hand for all manner of birthing issues, but you'll still find regulation sachets of unmentionable shampoo in the bathroom. Believe us, you'll really want a shower after all you've been through so take your favourite shower and hair products.

3. Pillows

Your own pillows will be a real comfort during your time in hospital. They'll help you sleep better and they'll smell like your own bed.

4. Something to eat

It's a good idea to take some of your favourite snacks in with you.

5. Something to read

We're not talking Tolstoy, but there will be times during labour when you don't have much to do so take a few magazines to alleviate the boredom, both for your and your partner.

6. Nursing bra and book

If you know you're going to try breastfeeding, or you're still undecided but don't want to rule it out, take a nursing bra and a book on breastfeeding - it's not as easy as it looks so you may need pictures to follow at first.

7. Camera, MP3 Player, Mobile Phone

8. A friend

Your partner is all very well, but someone who has been through the experience before is a great help. A mother, a sister, a close friend.

For baby

1. A car seat

This is essential. In fact most hospitals won't let you go home without one. And don't forget that the baby goes in back to front!

2. Clothes

Yes, your baby will need a going-home outfit too! Bring a vest, nappies and a romper suit (although pulling things over their head may be too traumatic at this stage - for you, not the baby).

3. A blanket

Even if it's warm outside, this will make your baby feel relaxed and protected.
